Marshmallow, best known as a sugary treat we char over a campfire and eat till we’re sick. But did you know this treat is inspired by a confection that used to be made from the sap of the marshmallow plant.
DID YOU KNOW… In contrast to the marshmallow candy, the marshmallow plant is tough and very bitter. The Ancient Egyptians were the first ones to make a sweet treat from the plant, when they combined marshmallow sap with nuts and honey, which was reserved for royalty. Marshmallows as we know them today don’t contain any marshmallow plant.
The leaves, flowers and most commonly the root of this plant have been used for centuries in a variety of ways to treat wounds, break up mucus, reduce inflammation and soothe sore throats and toothaches.
When mixed with water, this herb forms a mucilaginous (gel-like) consistency which helps to form a soothing film over mucous membranes, relieving minor pain and inflammation of the membrane – While both the root and leaf of marshmallow contain mucilage, the root contains a higher proportion of it.
This mucilage not only coats the throat and sinus membranes to soothe irritation, it may also help to soothe inflamed digestive ailments. For this reason, it has been traditionally used to ease heartburn, stomach pain and stomach ulcers.
DID YOU KNOW… The marshmallow plant made it to France where confectioners married the plant’s medicinal side with the indulgent qualities revealed by the Egyptians. This candy was called Pâte de Guimauve. It was a spongy-soft dessert made from whipping dried marshmallow roots with sugar, water, and egg whites. It was sold as a lozenge or bar form. Drying and preparing the marshmallow stretched production to a day or two. To cut down the time, confectioners substituted gelatin for the plant extract.
